About Us
Wakefield Peanut Company...the tradition continues
At Wakefield Peanut Company, we continue to cultivate a tradition of excellence that began more than 150 years ago when the first commercial peanut crop in the United States was grown only a few miles west from our location. And, for generations now, our family-owned business in Wakefield, Virginia, has produced some of the finest peanut products available.
In 1965, Henry Ellis, Sue Laine's father, opened a small peanut shelter, Wakefield Peanut Company, in the heart of "peanut country" where he began shelling and treating peanuts for planting. In 1973, Henry retired and sold the business to Sue and Jimmy Laine. Each year additions and renovations were made until the family owned company grew to a buying and Federal/State inspection station, a shelling and treating operation, a commercial kitchen where we cooked our peanuts, a shipping department and finally a retail shop. In 1993, the business was sold to Morven Partners with Jimmy Laine managing the Wakefield Peanut Company Division. In September of 2002, The Laine Family purchased the company from Morven Partners where the tradition continues.
